The Book of the Law of Wealth in an Hour by Shaykh Taqiuddeen al-Subki (founded 1875)Shaykh al-Subki's manual of Islamic fiqh is considered to be a masterpiece and one of the best examples of contemporary religious scholarship. The manual, called al-Tariqa, was composed over a period of forty years and is now used as a standard text in the most important centres for the study of Shafi'i jurisprudence in North Africa and Malaysia. It is not surprising that this book has been so popular with Muslim scholars and students who have written countless commentaries and books on it. Shaykh Taqi al-Din al-Subki was born in Iraq in 1875. He passed away in Baghdad on the 10th Rabi I 1319 H (22 April 1938 CE). For fifty years, Shaykh Taqi al-Din al-Subki was the leading scholar of the Shafi'i madhab in Iraq. He was also well known for his great scholarly achievements elsewhere, especially in Lebanon and Egypt. Although Shaykh al-Subki's books are now out of print, they remain cherished by his students who continue to read them and to refer to them for clarification on difficult points. Several students have written commentaries on the book. These commentaries are so popular today that they are included in almost all collections of religious texts. Since Shaykh al-Subki's books are no longer available, I have translated the two main ones into English. The book is comprised of twelve chapters containing more than 3,000 lam'as. The first seven chapters are devoted to the discussion of the fundamentals of Shafi'i fiqh according to Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama`ah (those who follow or rather adhere to Sunni Islam). The last five chapters deal with medicines, alchemy, magic and witchcraft. The author specifically mentions where he agrees with other jurists and disagrees with them. He concludes the book by listing the main points he discussed and then advising future generations of scholars to add more details, especially with regard to the hadiths, fiqh issues and new medical discoveries. I have translated this book into English in its entirety. I hope that it is useful for those who are interested in Shafi'i fiqh or who are looking for answers about different topics discussed by contemporary Muslim scholars. cfa1e77820
